Tonight in NYC: The Premiere of Two New E.E. Cummings Pieces

June 28, 2009

The singers are sounding terrific… I’m so excited! Woo hoo!

If you happen to be attending the concert (8:00 in Avery Fisher) please take a quick snapshot of the stage with your camera phone and post it here. Would love to see what all those singers look like from the seats in the house.

And I’ll try to make a rough video of the new pieces at the dress rehearsal. Totally illegal by Avery Fisher house rules, but you know, it’ll just be between us ;-)

    Have a blast! =D

  2. Woo-Hoo!!!

Have a blast! Remember, it’s not illegal if you don’t get caught! ;-)

  3. Ah man! I wish I could go!!! I would LOVE to hear this performance live! I would actually love to see ANY of your pieces performed live but they’re NEVER in my area…oh well (I guess).

Livin’ on the bad side are you? Ha-ha. I would have never guessed that the infamous Eric Whitacre would go against rules!
Have fun with the concert! I wish you the best of luck!

  4. It was awesome singing with you, Mister Whitacre. We’ll be in contact, if you don’t mind. I have a couple of questions for you to answer.

  5. It was AMAZING.

To those of you who didn’t get to go tonight, you really missed a treat.

(And I don’t just say that because my daughter was singing!)

Do, please, post the snapshots and the video of the dress rehearsal, if you can. I didn’t get a chance to see this blog entry before the show or I would have grabbed a quick shot, myself!

Congratulations, Eric. And thank you. It was wonderful to see the smile of pure joy on my child’s face when she sang the effervescent “la la la”s of “Kala Kalla.”

  6. Looking forward to the video! Good luck to the singers – enjoy it!

  7. Oooh no one told me about those dress rehearsal recordings!
I hope they worked out… let us know when they’ll be up!

Last night was truly amazing. I hope I can work with you again in the future– I will most certainly continue to listen to and sing your music wherever I go.

Thank you for such a beautiful experience.

I’ll post some of my poetry soon!

    Hope all is well.

    Faith

  8. Thank you so much for the amazing experience with DCINY! The whole process of this weekend was a blast and I can’t wait to come back and do it next year! Keep writing – it’s amazingly beautiful! :)

  9. Oh Lord, I was supposed to be in this but NOOOOO complications complications etc.

    But ogbasdf,haskdf video YES.
    I’m beyond excited.
    Someone hold me.

  10. Eric – I happened to read this blog entry on my phone at intermission. So I don’t have any pictures of the children’s groups, unfortunately.

On the plus side, I did have a “real” camera with me, so the picture of the full ensemble turned out pretty decent all things considered. Enjoy!

  11. Pssh. You should be allowed to record anything that you created. You shouldn’t have to be sneaky about it.

I’m also very, very excited to see said illegal video :)

  12. hi eric!
i’m a huge fan, and i have been lucky enough to attend both of your DCINY concerts. i also “accidentally” brought a “recording/camera device” into avery fisher hall both times.

the lighting didn’t quite agree with my camera, but i managed to get a few shots.

i recorded “Lux” in march, and “Animal Crackers Vol. II” this time around. here are the links!
    enjoy!

  13. Hey there! Had a great time singing with you! I was the older brother of the boy who had to sit down during Cloudburst last night haha! I spoke with you about him outside of Tavern On The Green. There is an old prayer my grandfather holds close to his heart i thought you of all people might like, ive always thought about translating it to Latin and maybe composing a piece of my own with it. Regardless its my gift to you for what you did for me last night, but more importantly my younger brother and my family.

    “The Bermuda Prayer”

    Heavenly Father,
We ask you for a grain of sand,
    You give us beach.
We ask you for a cup of water,
    You give us an ocean.
We ask you for a loaf of bread,
    You give us a feast.
    We ask you for love,
You give us friendship and understanding,
    We ask you for time,
    You give us life eternal.
May we not so love the gifts,
    That we forget the giver.
    Amen

    with regards

  14. My choir sang with you – Wausau Conservatory of Music – and they can’t stop talking about what a lovely, kind, funny and modest man you are. The concert was life changing for many of the kids, and they broke into YOUR songs 45 minutes from home on the bus…quite a moment. Thank You.

  15. oh, and here are my pics from the DCINY concert in march. they’re a little better than the ones from sunday.

  16. I saw the show at Avery Fisher Hall on June 28 and was happy I went. I got what was called an undesirable seat all the way to the left, but from there I could see Mr. Whitacre’s gestures to the choir. One that I thought was really fascinating was a sort of swirling of the fingers of one hand in front of his mouth. I wondered what on earth that could mean. My first thought was that it must mean to taste either the notes or the sound, but savor might be a better word because there was a certain intensity and pleasure on his face. I tried to taste the words I was speaking in my mouth later that day. I would absolutely love to know what that gesture means.

  17. In all simpleness… Jennifer, I sang in it, and that movement was for diction. To chew the words. But, those consonants make him and us feel a certain way, it is almost spiritual for the words. Think about it. Communication through music… The sounds make a cretain sound that allows you to feel.

Kinda like he’s waving his magic wand.

    THANK YOU. so much
you have made this past weekend the best expirience of my life, everything i work for was in front of me at our concert, you are truly an amazing human being and i respect you so very much.

  19. Hey!!!! Just dropping a note to say how incredibly AMAZING it was to get to work with you! I spoke to you once on break during a rehearsal (we talked about my hair and how it matched my glasses and that you loved it, yeah, you might not remember that moment, but I will forever :D ) This past weekend will be one I will take with me for the rest of my life. I am so inspired to make music, I picked back up a few pieces I almost gave up writing. I’m gonna keep trying. The concert was great, I hope to be able to work with you again one day!

    Thank you so much,
    Mandy Kline

  20. Mr. Whitacre,
This trip will always hold a special place in my heart. I graduated from the performing arts school in PA last year and have not sung (besides in the shower) since then. When I learned the touring choir was accepted in the DCINY program I couldn’t have been more proud and happy for the students selected to go. When I came home from college and was asked to take the place of someone who could no longer go I wanted to cry. Singing your music under your conducting was truly a gift.
Thank you and I hope to work with you again in the future.
    Sasta P.
